Bahama Mama
There's a palpable vibe as you shuffle through customs at Nassau International Airport in the Bahamas. A CD of the area's soothing rhythms echoes in the background, and the people standing in line are already shedding their winter clothes in favor of more summery fare. But can you blame them? It actually looks like January where most of them just came from.
But don't let the sunshine and beaches fool you. There is a group of over 700 players descending on the islands, with a prize pool of more than $7 million at stake. Even wearing Bermuda shorts, this bunch looks pretty serious. The moment these players, from the most high-profile pro to the rawest online satellite qualifier, lined up for the first day of competition in the Atlantis Resort & Casino Ballroom, the deafening sound of rustling chips was enough to make you forget that paradise was literally just outside the door.
Settled by English colonialists in the 1600s, Paradise Island, off the Bahamas' Northeast coast, was initially named for the countless wild hogs that inhabited it. By the time the island was bought in 1959 for $20 million by Huntington Hartford, heir to the formidable Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, Hog Island hadn't changed much. Less than 50 years and one major name change later, with three beautiful hotel towers and another on the way, Paradise Island is becoming one of the world's largest resort areas.
Between the beach and the incredible marine life displayed at the resort's countless aquariums, it's easy for even the tournament's most high-profile players to get a bit too comfortable. Fresh off his main event victory at the 2005 world series of Poker, Joe Hachem came here with his family ten days early so he could enjoy some downtime. That time (the Atlantic Casino doesn't have poker) is the longest he's gone without playing in recent memory. "I'm itching, I'm shaking," he jokes, enjoying what little family time he has since becoming poker's newest celebrity. "Obviously it's been a hectic time for me since the World Series.
When arrived, I thought I'm going to lose at least one child. This is the first time I've been able to relax since the World Series." "We love it here," says 2004 main event champ Greg Raymer, who even pulled his daughter out of school for a week for the Caribbean Adventure. "I'm going to have a great time in the tournament winning money or playing on the beach. It's too bad more of the events aren't like this."
With its formidable prize pool, many of the world's best players have made an appearance in the Bahamas: Ivey, Lindgren, Matusow, Moneymaker, Harman, Greenstein, Mizrachi, Cloutier, Ng, and Seidel, just to name a few. By the third day of the tournament, they're almost all eliminated. The last major names to leave the tournament are Hachem, who finishes a disappointing 67th, Hoyt Corkins, who finishes 61st, and Matt Matros, who finishes 22nd. By the time the final table is set against the scenic Caribbean backdrop, the lone recognizable face is poker pro David Singer, who goes in as the chip leader. He's got some youngsters to contend with in the form of 18-year-olds Aurangzeb Sheikh and Michael Higgins, as well as 22-year-old Stephen Paul-Ambrose, a student at Canada's University of Waterloo. Sheikh busts out on the table's first hand and wins $177,200 for his trouble. Paul-Ambrose, on the other hand, manages to zoom past Anders Henriksson, Higgins, and Singer before going head to head with Brooke Lyter, who qualified in a $33 re-buy tournament. But after catching plenty of draws on the river, Paul Ambrose took home the $1.3 million prize.
When it's over, you get the distinct impression that poker is leaving the island until next year, when it will again get a special government exemption to host games. But you can still find them, with Internet cafes across the Bahamas rumored to host secret poker events. So if you need to check your email for a few minutes while in paradise, poke your head in the back for some action. Or just wait until January for the next PokerStars event, assuming you can get past the youngsters.
Handling poker players
Poker is a very challenging card game because we not only handle cards but players as well. One of the most challenging aspects of handling poker players is when we handle tight-passive ones. How should handling poker players - the tight-passive types - be done effectively?
One way of handling poker players who have tight-passive tendencies is to play aggressively. These players mostly don't stand a chance with the action-packed nature of no-limit Texas holdem. Most of these players are hesitant risk-takers, if they take any at all. They want good hands but do not wish to take risks betting aggressively with them - or perhaps don't know how. Handling poker players like them should be easy. We just bluff by making a raise pre-flop and attempt to take down the pot during the flop.
Another way of handling poker players with tight-passive plays is to frustrate their win chances in the hand. We'd know easily if these players hold strong hands - they'd bet strong. If they hardly bet or make weak ones, they probably have weak hands or waiting for a draw. Thus, if they come betting strongly, we know they have solid hands. We fold immediately to limit the pot they would win.
When we have a solid hand to control players with, we should use them in handling poker players, especially the tight-passive. We may force them to react to our bet - like when we punish them for merely calling our bluff - or when they would want to see how strong they are in the hand. Also, tight-passive players can be easily intimidated to merely call or fold when we have a strong hand.
Tight-passive players may be good in limit Texas holdem. But this gives them a habit that makes them play badly in no-limit. In limit poker the uniform betting takes away all appreciation of hand values. This is when players hesitate to up their bets when they hold solid hands in no-limit. No-limit players easily recognize a potential hand when they see one and bet all the way to work out a hefty pot. Thus, in handling poker players with tight-passive persuasion, we go all out with our bets before they think of exploiting their hand potential with aggressive betting.
However, we should also remember that tight-passive players are pretty sharp with their hand play. They may not bet their strong hands so much, but they only play strong hands. Thus, handling poker players of their kind should be with hand strength and strategy.
Objectives of Internet Poker Tournaments
This article will discuss the fundamental elements needed to win an Internet poker tournament. It is important to understand the priorities of a player when playing Internet poker tournaments.
In Internet poker tournaments the player's objectives should be:
1. Survival - You should be able to survive to play at the finals table. The ultimate goal is to be the sole survivor. It sounds like a cheesy reality show but it should always be your main goal.
2. Build and Protect Your Chip Arsenal - You must be able to build enough chips to survive the bigger blinds and larger bets at the latter stages of the Internet poker tournament. You should also build a large stack of chips early on. This is to be able to take calculated risks from time to time. However, this must be accomplished without risking the chance to lose early as well. Yes, a delicate balance but one to keep focused on.
A player's failure to be agressive and build an early chip arsenal will make the player erode slowly when higher antes and blinds come up.
3. Be focused - Try to focus on your game plan. Only attack when the right cards and situations become present. Then, when these situations arise, convert them into profits. Also avoid making occasional mistakes when you do not pay close attention to the game. Always keep in mind that you should be patient!
4. Adaptability - As the Internet poker tournament progresses, you should see when the dynamics of the game are changing and be able to quickly adapt to new conditions such as:
The players at the table. The style of play of the other players. ? The size of your chip stack against your opponents. ? The Pot Odds, especially when the blinds and the antes increase. ? Avoid making mistakes especially when you move to a new table.
Internet Texas Holdem poker tournaments are designed to eliminate players progressively. That is why the ultimate objective as mentioned above is to survive and protect your chips. That is why it is not advisable to take unnecessary risks yet at the same time be agressive when the situation dictates it.
Practice patience and only attack at the best moments you see fit. Attack only when the odds are in your favor together with a proper battle plan in mind.
Remember that in Internet poker tournaments, patience is truly a virtue to succeed.
Good Luck!
Playing Poker Online
Poker is an exciting card game. Poker players look forward to tournaments the way people wait for Olympics. Great poker players earn respect and admiration. And poker is the only casino game that cannot be rigged. This means that players can actually win. Practically anyone can learn and play poker. But poker is not for everyone. There are certain types of people who should not play poker at all.
An emotional person should not play poker. We are not saying that poker players should be made of stone. But poker players are people who can subdue emotional outbursts and can channel what they feel into more positive and profitable endeavors. If a person is emotional and given to teary episodes or raging spasms, then poker is not his game. Unless he wants to lose all the time.
A person who has low tolerance should not play poker. A great part of poker is governed by odds and probabilities. And then, there is also luck involved. If a person cannot tolerate bad beats, weak cards, and losing streaks, then he cannot enjoy poker. Poker players also have different personalities. Some try hard to be comical while others are irritating. If a person cannot withstand sitting for hours together with such players, then playing poker will only bring him problems.
A person who likes to cheat should not play poker. Granted, poker started as a card game played by cheats, con men, and criminals, but that was many years ago. Poker is now recognized as a card game that can be beaten if the player is skilled enough. People who cheat at poker will not be welcomed by other poker players.
Lastly, a person who has a gambling problem should not play poker. Poker is a gambling game. All players realize that. But they should also realize that it is only a game and not a substitute for a good meal. In poker, it is possible to win money. And it is also possible to lose some. If you are a person who bets money that you cannot afford to lose, then you should not play poker.
How will you know that you will not have a gambling problem once you start playing poker? Visualize this. When a person comes to join a poker table, he risks losing his money. The money lost is lost. If you are a person who believes that the money you lost should be won back, then you will most likely have a gambling problem. You should avoid poker.

Doyle Brunson: Bio
If poker had a poster boy, it would definitely be Doyle Brunson. From his trademark Stetson hat to his Texas drawl, one could not mistake that Brunson is definitely a poker player from head to foot. We caught up with Brunson in an interview and found out a few things about the man behind the game.
Many youngsters today may be wondering what got the legend started in poker. When asked about it he said: "When I was a junior in college I broke my leg. I'd been an athlete all my life and I was making an effort to get into the NBA. The Minneapolis Lakers -- it's the Los Angeles Lakers now, but then it was the Minneapolis Lakers -- they came down to see me and had a definite interest in me. But I broke my leg severely and was on crutches for two years. I went back to school and got my degree, and was still on crutches. I didn't know what to do with myself, so I went back to get a master's degree, and I had to play poker to pay for the tuition and room and board. So I started playing."
After trying his hand on poker, and being successful at that, one may wonder if he ever got a "real job". Brunson tells us: "I was going to be a teacher and a coach, but the pay was so bad that I went to work for Burroughs Corporation, which was a bookkeeping machine company. I was a salesman and I had the north side of Fort Worth, Texas as my territory. I started traveling around, and everywhere I went, I kept finding these poker games. I started playing in them and realized I was better than almost anyone I played. I worked for Burroughs for about a year, but I didn't like selling, so I quit. I started playing poker professionally at the age of 23."
Brunson also recalls that there was a time when poker seemed to be like a scene from the old Wild West and not the civilized game that is being played on TV now.
"There were a lot of volatile people around. It wasn't supervised in any official capacity. It was just played in a bunch of pool halls and nightclubs, and there were plenty unsavory characters hanging around all the time. I saw five people get killed out on the street where I was playing -- it was just a way of life to those people. It's a completely different animal now. Everything's supervised. You're in a legal atmosphere and everything's regulated. It's just an entirely different experience."
Brunson has seen a lot of money during his long career at playing poker, and he gamely answered when asked about the largest amount he ever won in one sitting. "I think it was $770,000, and that was a long time ago. It was a cash game. I'm not counting tournaments."

Brunson is also famous for being the first ever poker expert to write a book about the game. The honor of being one of the only two poker players who won ten of World Series of Poker bracelets is his. He is also famous for having a poker hand named after him, the ten and two. Why was it named after him? It was named after him because he won two consecutive World Series of Poker championships with that hand.
Bobby Baldwin
In the world of poker, it is rare that a player is impressed by another. However, Doyle Brunson was definitely impressed by Bobby Baldwin's poker skills. After winning the World Series of Poker Championship at such a young age, he was offered by Doyle Brunson to contribute to Brunson's book.
Sailor Roberts
His moniker sailor came from his being formerly in the navy. This war veteran became a famous poker player when he won in World Series of Poker in 1975. But before that, he was gambling on the road, so you could say that he had much practice and with different sorts of people. That didn't make it surprising for him to be able to win in the WSOP main event.
